Should hate speech be protected by the First Amendment?
Don’t just learn more skills to disagree better; practice the skills you already have. You are invited to attend a campus wide event on Wednesday, October 29th focused on using the skills of dialogue across differences.
In partnership with Braver Angels and the College Debates and Discourse Alliance, an internal group of UMD staff, faculty, and students committed to constructive dialogue are pleased to make space for respectful conversation touching all sides of this challenging issue. Braver Angels debates are not competitive. Instead, they provide a deep experience of civil discourse. Conducted in a light parliamentary style, they teach participants to engage with each other respectfully around difficult, polarizing issues. Participants think together, listen carefully, and allow themselves to be touched and even changed by each other’s ideas. Participants emerge with greater empathy and appreciation for diversity of thought.
